What's an LOCI and when to send one?

I keep seeing people mention LOCI in regard to college apps, and I'm a bit confused about what it is and when I should send one. Can someone fill me in on the details and any tips for writing one?

An LOCI, or Letter of Continued Interest, is a document that you send to a college after you've been deferred or waitlisted to express your ongoing interest in attending that institution.

The primary purpose of an LOCI is to update the admissions office on any new accomplishments, explain why the college remains your top choice, and demonstrate your enthusiasm for the school. By doing this, you're helping to convey that you're a committed applicant and that you would accept an offer of admission if given the opportunity.

When to send an LOCI:

1. If deferred during Early Decision or Early Action: Send your LOCI after receiving your deferral, typically within 2-3 weeks, so that the admissions office has time to review your letter before making final decisions.

2. If waitlisted during Regular Decision: Send your LOCI soon after you find out about your waitlist status, ideally within 2-3 weeks to indicate your continuing dedication to the school. Keep in mind that the waitlisted students might get off the waitlist around May 1st or later, which is the national decision deadline for most colleges.

Tips for writing an LOCI:

1. Be concise and specific: Keep your letter brief (about one page) and focus on the important updates or achievements since you last submitted your application.

2. Share new information: Mention any notable accomplishments, awards, extracurricular involvements, or academic improvements that were not part of your original application.
