VCU Chemistry Department Experience?

Hi all! I'm looking into VCU for a possible major in chemistry. Does anyone have any personal experience with their chemistry department? I'm curious about the quality of the professors, classes, and research opportunities. Thanks!

Hi! VCU's Chemistry Department has a solid reputation and offers a range of opportunities for undergraduate students. I'd be happy to share some information that might be helpful for you to know.

First, the department offers a range of BS degrees in chemistry, each of which has different concentration areas, such as biochemistry or chemical modeling. This setup means you'll have the flexibility to choose the program that aligns best with your particular goals and interests within the field of chemistry.

As for the quality of professors, VCU has a mix of seasoned professors and newer faculty members, which helps create a dynamic learning environment. Students often find professors approachable and dedicated to teaching, but as with any university, there will inevitably be some professors who may not be the best fit for your particular learning style. It can be helpful to consult online resources like Rate My Professors to gain insights from past students when selecting your classes, to ensure you'll be in the right learning environment for you.

Regarding classes, VCU's Chemistry Department provides a solid foundation in core chemistry subjects such as organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry. Depending on which concentration you choose, you'll also have the opportunity to take elective courses in areas like biochemistry, environmental chemistry, and materials chemistry, so that you can explore various sub-fields within chemistry.

When it comes to research opportunities, VCU actively encourages undergraduate involvement in research. The department has a range of ongoing research projects, which span areas like bioinorganic chemistry, nanoscience, and medicinal chemistry, to name a few. Several undergraduate research opportunities exist, such as the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), or you can pursue an independent research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Research a great way to both develop lab skills and gain valuable hands-on experience in your field.

Lastly, internships and co-op opportunities are also available for chemistry majors at VCU. Engaging in internships during your studies can provide you with industry experience, networking opportunities, and even potentially job offers after graduation.

While I hope this information helps, the best way to get a feel for the chemistry department is by visiting VCU, attending an open house or a departmental information session, and talking to current students and faculty. And don't forget to consider VCU's overall campus culture as well - after all, you want to be sure that you choose a school where you'll thrive personally as well as academically!

Good luck with your college search!
