NIU Theater program?

Hi everyone, I'm considering going to Northern Illinois University and I'm really into theater. Can anyone share their experience with the theater program there? Are there good opportunities for acting, tech, and other aspects of theater?

Hello! I'm glad to hear you're considering Northern Illinois University (NIU) and have a passion for theater. The theater program at NIU has a solid reputation and offers a comprehensive curriculum for those looking to dive into various aspects of theater, including acting, tech, and design.

The School of Theatre and Dance at NIU offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts programs with various concentrations such as acting, design and technology, and theater studies. When you apply, you'll choose which concentration best matches your specific interests and goals within the world of theater.

The NIU theater program also has several high-quality performance spaces like the Stevens Building. The program typically puts on four to six mainstage productions each academic year, which give students plenty of opportunities to get involved both on stage and behind the scenes. Moreover, there are additional opportunities to participate in student-led productions and workshops, so you'll have plenty of chances to complement your studies with hands-on experiences.

The faculty at the School of Theatre and Dance includes experienced professionals with a wide range of backgrounds in acting, directing, design, and more. Many students have praised the accessibility and dedication of the faculty, which leads to a more enriching, empowering learning experience.

As with any program, the experiences you have may vary depending on your interests and involvement. However, overall the NIU theater program is known to be a strong choice for those passionate about the performing arts. I would suggest attending an open house or arranging a visit to get a better feel for the program and talk with current students to gather more insight into their experiences. Best of luck with your decision!
