Classics at UC Davis?

Hi everyone! I'm considering UC Davis for a Classics major, but I'm having trouble finding much information about the program. Can anyone share their experiences or thoughts on the department? Professors, coursework, and opportunities? Thanks so much!

I can definitely provide some insights on the Classics program at UC Davis. Overall, the department is known to be supportive, and it offers a solid foundation in the field. The faculty members are experienced and knowledgeable, and many are dedicated to providing a quality education to their students. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including language studies in Greek and Latin as well as courses focused on the history, literature, and culture of the ancient Mediterranean world.

The coursework can be challenging, but this is expected given the nature of the subject. Many students have appreciated the small class sizes in the department, as they allow for more in-depth discussions and greater attention from professors. The department also offers several opportunities for students to engage with the material outside of the classroom through events, lectures, and research projects.

One thing to keep in mind is that while the program itself is comprehensive, it may not be as well-known or as large as those at some other universities. However, many students who have gone through the program at UC Davis have found it to be a solid foundation for pursuing further studies or careers related to Classics.

In terms of opportunities, the department often hosts guest speakers and scholars, allowing students to engage with experts in the field on a regular basis. There are also opportunities to join the Eta Sigma Phi honor society for Classics students, which facilitates networking and can open up avenues for growth and development within the field.

Lastly, the campus resources like the library and language labs provide additional support for Classics students. Keep in mind that UC Davis has a strong commitment to undergraduate research, which can help enhance your education if you plan on delving into research in the Classics.

Overall, the Classics department at UC Davis offers a solid education in the field with supportive faculty members and various opportunities for academic growth. While it might not be the most well-known program out there, for students with a genuine interest and passion for the subject, it can be an excellent place to pursue your major.
