Music Programs at UMN?

Hey, has anyone had experience with music programs at the University of Minnesota (UMN)? I'm considering applying there but would love some insight into the quality of their music programs. Thanks for any info!

Hey there! The University of Minnesota offers a solid music program through the School of Music under the College of Liberal Arts. The School of Music provides a range of music degree options, including Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Performance, and Music Therapy, as well as minors and graduate programs.

The music program at UMN boasts an impressive faculty including well-known performers, composers, and researchers. The facilities include Ferguson Hall, which houses classrooms, recital spaces, practice rooms, and a state-of-the-art recording studio. The music program also offers multiple performance ensembles, ranging from the University Symphony Orchestra and University Opera Theatre to the Jazz Ensembles and concert bands.

One of the benefits of studying music at UMN is the vibrant arts scene in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Students have the opportunity to experience live performances, attend masterclasses, and engage with the local arts community. Additionally, the School of Music often hosts events such as concerts, recitals, and student showcases, enabling students to gain valuable performance experience.

While I cannot speak from personal experience, many students have found success in the music program at UMN, and the departments offer strong support and resources for aspiring musicians. However, as with any college decision, it's essential to research the program specifics and visit if possible to get a feel for whether UMN's music program is the right fit for you.

I hope that helps, and best of luck with your college search!
