Studying Philosophy at UC Santa Cruz?

I'm a high school junior and am intrigued by the philosophy program at UC Santa Cruz. Can anyone give me some insights into the program? What are the professors like, and how are the research/internship opportunities available for philosophy students at UCSC?

UC Santa Cruz offers a solid undergraduate philosophy program that focuses on both historical and contemporary philosophical issues. The faculty members at UCSC come from diverse backgrounds and expertise, which allows students to explore various areas in philosophy including ethics, logic, metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophical traditions from various cultures.

The professors at UCSC are well-regarded for being accessible, engaging, and knowledgeable in their fields. Many students appreciate the small class sizes and personalized attention they receive from their professors, which allows for thought-provoking discussions and a strong learning environment.

As for research opportunities, undergraduate students have the chance to collaborate with faculty members on research projects, which may include opportunities such as working as a research assistant or co-authoring papers. Collaborating with professors on research can be an excellent way to deepen your understanding of philosophy and develop important intellectual and analytical skills.

There are also internship opportunities available that can extend your learning beyond the classroom. While internships specifically tailored to philosophy students might not be as common as those for some other majors, you can still find opportunities that align with your philosophical interests and goals. These may include internships related to public policy, social justice, community organizing, and nonprofit work.

UCSC also has a thriving philosophy club where you can further explore your interests, connect with fellow philosophy enthusiasts, and engage in stimulating discussions outside of the classroom.

If you're considering the philosophy program at UC Santa Cruz, I would recommend visiting the campus if possible, and trying to talk to current students or professors in the program. They'll be able to offer you firsthand experiences and insights into the program. Good luck with your college search!
