Georgetown University Journalism Programs?

Hey y'all, I want to pursue journalism as a career and I'm thinking about applying to Georgetown University. Can anyone provide some information on their journalism programs and how strong the department is? Much appreciated!

Georgetown University has a strong program in journalism within its School of Continuing Studies, offering a Master's degree in Journalism and, for undergraduate students, a minor in Journalism. It doesn't have a formal undergraduate major in journalism. However, Georgetown's emphasis on communication and liberal arts creates excellent opportunities to develop strong writing and critical thinking skills that can contribute to a successful career in journalism.

Within the undergraduate curriculum, Georgetown has a strong focus on subjects such as English, history, and government, which can provide a solid foundation for a career in journalism. Additionally, Georgetown's location in Washington, D.C., offers numerous opportunities to gain experience and connections in the field. Being located in one of the main hubs for media and politics means that students have easy access to internships, networking events, and professional development opportunities with leading media outlets and organizations.

To supplement your undergraduate studies and gain journalism-specific training, you can choose to minor in Journalism at Georgetown. The minor focuses on the evolution and practice of journalism in a rapidly changing media landscape, with courses on reporting, media law, digital storytelling, and more. This minor can be an excellent complement to your major studies and provide a strong foundation in journalistic principles and practices.

That said, if you are looking for a dedicated undergraduate program in journalism, there may be other universities that offer a more structured and specialized program. However, Georgetown is still an excellent choice for students who want a well-rounded education with a focus on communications and critical thinking, and the journalism minor can help you specialize further.

Remember that Georgetown's reputation, strong liberal arts education, and location in D.C. make it attractive to journalism employers. While it's not a dedicated journalism major, a degree from Georgetown in a related field accompanied by a journalism minor can certainly be a valuable stepping stone towards a career in journalism.
