Hey there, I'm a high school junior and I'm super into math! I'm looking at the University of Minnesota and was wondering if anyone could provide some info on their math major? How is the department, faculty and what sort of opportunities (research, internships, etc.) could I expect as a Math major there? Appreciate any help!

Hello! The University of Minnesota has a strong Mathematics department that offers a solid foundation in various areas of mathematics, including pure math, applied math, and mathematics education. As a math major at UMN, you'll be able to dive into courses ranging from algebra, analysis, and geometry to more applied subjects like mathematical modeling, numerical analysis, and probability.

The faculty at UMN's School of Mathematics are highly qualified and experienced, with many holding various distinctions in their respective fields that reflect their accomplishments. They are known to be approachable and supportive, which leads to an empowering learning environment for students.

Regarding research and internship opportunities, the University of Minnesota provides numerous options for math majors. For example, the department participates in the university-wide Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), which facilitates partnerships between undergraduate students and faculty members on research projects. This program offers valuable hands-on experience in various research areas, and you may sometimes even be paid for your research work.

Additionally, UMN math majors can participate in the Mathematical Association of America's annual Putnam Competition, a prestigious intercollegiate mathematics competition. This competition not only provides an opportunity for you to challenge yourself but also connects you with individuals who share your passion for math.

For internships, UMN's Career Services are available to help you find relevant opportunities within the industry. Due to math majors' strong analytical and problem-solving skills, they have a wide range of internships and careers available to them, including positions in finance, technology, education, and more.

To make the most of your experience at UMN as a math major, consider joining math-related clubs, such as the Math Club or the Gender Minorities in Mathematics (GeMM) student group. These clubs host events, discussions, and networking opportunities that can enhance your educational experience and help you make connections in the field.

Overall, the University of Minnesota offers a robust program for math majors, by providing them with a strong education, faculty support, research experiences, and opportunities for growth beyond the classroom.
