How's the music program at SF State?

I'm currently a junior looking into San Francisco State University for their music program. Can someone please share their experiences or thoughts on the program there? What kind of opportunities are available for music students at SF State?

The music program at San Francisco State University (SF State) has a solid reputation and offers a variety of opportunities for students interested in pursuing music. The School of Music within the College of Liberal & Creative Arts offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees, both of which allow students to specialize in a specific area such as composition, music education, or performance (including instrumental, vocal, and jazz).

One of the program's strengths is its dedicated and experienced faculty, who come from diverse musical backgrounds and are accomplished performers themselves. They often serve as mentors, helping students develop their skills and providing networking opportunities within the music industry.

SF State has multiple performing ensembles such as the Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Singers, University Chorus, and Afro-Cuban Ensemble, among others. Students are encouraged to join these groups, which provide a platform to gain performance experience and collaborate with fellow musicians. Additionally, public classes and workshops are regularly offered throughout the year, allowing students to further develop their musicianship and learn from guest educators and industry professionals.

The campus location is also a plus, as San Francisco is a city known for its vibrant arts and music scene. This gives students access to local performances, festivals, and networking opportunities, as well as internships and part-time positions related to the field of music.

While the SF State music program may not be as prestigious as some renowned conservatories, it does offer a well-rounded and comprehensive education for students seeking careers in music or related fields. Be sure to visit the campus and speak with current students and faculty to gain firsthand insights into the program and determine whether it's the right fit for you!

Finally, if you're looking for ways to maximize your chances of acceptance to SF State's music program, check out this blog post from CollegeVine, which contains a list of well-regarded summer programs for high schoolers interested in music, many of which allow you to focus on your particular speciality: https://blog.collegevine.com/high-school-summer-music-programs.
