Calculating weighted GPA?

So, I'm a junior this year and I'm trying to figure out my weighted GPA. Can someone explain how to find my weighted GPA using my classes' honors/AP/IB and normal course levels? I want to know where I stand while applying to college.

Calculating your weighted GPA can be helpful to gauge where you stand in the college application process. Keep in mind that GPA calculation methods vary between high schools and colleges might recalculate your GPA based on their specific criteria. Nonetheless, here's a general method for calculating a weighted GPA:

1. Assign point values to each grade you have received: Typically, an A = 4 points, B = 3 points, C = 2 points, D = 1 point, F = 0 points.

2. Add extra weight to Honors, AP, and IB courses: Many schools offer an additional 0.5-point weight for Honors-level courses and a 1-point weight for AP and IB courses. For example, an A in an AP course would be worth 5 points.

3. Calculate GPA for individual courses: Multiply the assigned point value for each grade by the credit hours of that course. For instance, if you got an A (4 points) in a 1-credit course, the result would be 4 points (4 x 1). If you got an B (3 points) in a 1-credit Honors course, the result would be 3.5 points (3 + 0.5).

4. Sum the total points: Add up the calculated points for all completed courses.

5. Add your total credit hours: Calculate the total credit hours of all your completed courses combined.

6. Divide total points by total credit hours: To find your weighted GPA, divide the sum of your total points by the total credit hours.

For example, if you have taken 3 regular courses with 1 credit each for which you received A, B, and C and an AP course for which you received an A (also 1 credit), the calculation would be as follows:

- Regular A: 1 x 4 = 4 points

- Regular B: 1 x 3 = 3 points

- Regular C: 1 x 2 = 2 points

- AP A: 1 x (4 + 1) = 5 points

Total Points: 4 + 3 + 2 + 5 = 14

Total Credit Hours: 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4

Weighted GPA: Total Points/Total Credit Hours = 14/4 = 3.50

This is a general approach, and your high school might have a different calculation method. It's a good idea to check with your school counselor to understand the exact process your school follows, as this can provide a more accurate weighted GPA for your school and situation.
