Can I use a calculator during the SAT?

Hi everyone, I'm preparing for the SAT and I'm unsure whether I'm allowed to use a calculator for the math sections of the test. What are the specific rules and restrictions? Appreciate the help!

Yes, you are allowed to use a calculator during one of the two math sections of the SAT. The SAT has both a calculator-allowed math section (known as the Calculator section) and a no-calculator math section (known as the No Calculator section). Here is a quick overview of these sections:

1. No Calculator section: This section contains 20 questions, both multiple-choice and grid-in, and you get 25 minutes to complete it. As the name suggests, you're not allowed to use a calculator during this part of the test.

2. Calculator section: This section contains 38 questions, including multiple-choice and grid-in questions, and you get 55 minutes to complete it. You are allowed to use an approved calculator during this part of the test.

Keep in mind that there are specific rules regarding which calculators are permissible for the SAT. The College Board allows most graphing calculators, all scientific calculators, and some four-function calculators (although they don't recommend using those due to their limitations). Some calculator features that are NOT allowed include:

- Calculators with a QWERTY keyboard

- Calculators that can communicate wirelessly or with other devices

- Calculators with paper tape features

- Calculators that make audible noise

Make sure your calculator is an approved model, and ensure that it's in good working order with fresh batteries before taking the test. Familiarize yourself with the calculator's functions and practice using it during your SAT preparation to make the most effective use of it during the Calculator section. Good luck with your SAT preparation!
