What's the best way to get a letter of recommendation?

I've started thinking about letters of recommendation for college applications. How should I approach my teachers, and what's the best way to ensure they write a strong letter? I want to make sure they have enough time and information to write something meaningful.

It's great that you're thinking ahead about letters of recommendation! To start, try narrowing your choices down to two or three teachers who have had a significant impact on your high school experience, both academically and personally. Ideally, the teachers you choose should know you well and be able to speak to your strengths, achievements, and character.

When approaching your chosen teachers, give them plenty of notice—at least one month before the deadline. It would be best to ask them in person if they'd be willing to write a letter of recommendation on your behalf. Make sure to express your appreciation for their consideration.

To help them write a strong letter, provide them with key information about yourself. This might include a resume, list of extracurricular activities, or an outline of your goals for college and beyond. Consider including a short summary of specific instances where you had meaningful experiences in class or were particularly successful in their subject area.

Lastly, don't forget to follow up with a thank you note or email. Expressing your gratitude will go a long way in showing your respect for their time and effort.
