AP Calc AB vs. Calc BC: Which one should I take?

Senior year is coming up and I can't decide whether to take AP Calc AB or Calc BC. What are the main differences between them, and which one would you recommend based on difficulty and usefulness? Thanks!

AP Calc AB and AP Calc BC are both calculus courses but with slightly different scopes and levels of depth. I'll explain the key differences between the two, which will hopefully help you decide which one is right for you.

AP Calculus AB is an introduction to differential and integral calculus. Topics covered include limits, continuity, derivatives, and integrals. It is equivalent to a one-semester college course in calculus, typically taken by students in their first semester of college-level math.

AP Calculus BC, on the other hand, covers all the material in Calc AB plus additional content. This includes more advanced techniques of integration, series and convergence, and polar, parametric, and vector functions. Calc BC is equivalent to two semesters of college-level calculus.

In terms of difficulty, Calc BC is generally considered more challenging due to the additional topics and faster pace. If you've already had a strong foundation in pre-calculus and find math to be one of your stronger subjects, Calc BC may be a good challenge for you. However, if you're less confident in your math abilities or haven't yet built a solid foundation in pre-calculus, then Calc AB might be a better choice, as it provides a more gradual introduction to calculus concepts.

As for usefulness, it depends on your future plans and major. If you plan to pursue a STEM-related field in college, Calc BC will provide you with a stronger foundation and potentially allow you to skip one or two semesters of college calculus, freeing up time to take other courses in your major. AP Calc AB, while still helpful for STEM students, doesn't typically allow you to skip as many college courses.

If your intended major is not in a STEM field, AP Calc AB may be sufficient to fulfill your college's math requirement, and you can focus on other areas of interest in your senior year.

To sum up, if you have a strong math background and plan to pursue a STEM major, Calc BC might be a better choice due to its increased rigor and potential for college credit. If you're less certain about your math abilities or planning to major in a non-STEM field, Calc AB can provide a solid introduction to calculus without the added difficulty of BC's extra content.
