What is the NMSQT?

Hi there! I've been hearing a lot about the NMSQT, but I don't really know what it is or what it's for. Can anyone explain what it is and how it's related to the PSAT? Thanks!

The NMSQT, or the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, refers to the preliminary SAT taken for consideration in the National Merit Scholarship Program, a prestigious and competitive academic scholarship competition in the United States. In essence, the NMSQT is actually the PSAT/NMSQT, which is administered by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

When you take the PSAT/NMSQT, not only are you practicing for the actual SAT, but you're also participating in the National Merit Scholarship Program – provided you meet certain eligibility requirements like being a high school junior, a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and not having already graduated from high school. Your scores on the PSAT/NMSQT are used by the NMSC to identify potential scholarship recipients under their program.

Around 1.5 million high school students participate in this competition annually, and those who score within the top 3-4% become Commended Scholars. The top 1% of scorers, approximately 16,000 students, are named National Merit Semifinalists. From this pool of Semifinalists, about 15,000 students advance as Finalists, and around 7,500 of these students are ultimately awarded National Merit Scholarships.

It's important to understand that the NMSQT designation specifically refers to the competition for National Merit Scholarships. While it is related to the PSAT, it's not merely a practice test but also a potential gateway to scholarships and recognition.
