Johns Hopkins Linguistics Program?

Hey all, I'm interested in majoring in linguistics and have been exploring different colleges. Is there a linguistics program at Johns Hopkins? If so, how is it and what's been your experience?

Hello! While Johns Hopkins does not have a separate linguistics major, they do offer a major in Cognitive Science with a concentration in Linguistics. The Cognitive Science program at Johns Hopkins is interdisciplinary, allowing you to explore many related fields such as psychology, neuroscience, computer science, and philosophy, in addition to linguistics.

Many students find the interdisciplinary approach to be beneficial, as it provides a broader context for understanding language and its role in human thought and behavior. The faculty members in the program are experts in their respective fields and are actively engaged in research, ensuring you'll have access to current knowledge and diverse perspectives.

As for experiences in the program, I've heard from students who appreciated the flexibility that the Cognitive Science program offers in terms of selecting courses that match their interests and career goals. They also praised the research opportunities available within the department and at other well-regarded research centers affiliated with Johns Hopkins. These experiences can be incredibly valuable, helping you develop connections, gain real-world research experience, and stand out in future applications, whether for grad school or jobs in related fields.

If you're set on a more focused linguistics major, you may want to consider looking at other universities with specialized linguistics programs. However, if you're open to a more interdisciplinary approach, Johns Hopkins' Cognitive Science program could be an excellent fit for you. Good luck with your college search!
