Is reading a valid extracurricular activity?

Hey all, I'm an avid reader and have read hundreds of books throughout high school. Would it be a good idea to list reading as an extracurricular activity on my college application, or does it not really count? Thanks in advance!

Hi there! It's great to see that you're an avid reader. Reading can indeed be considered a valid extracurricular activity, especially if you have invested a significant amount of time in it outside of your school work and regular studies. However, it might be more impactful if you can demonstrate how your love for reading has led to more concrete accomplishments or involvement in related activities. For example, if you have started a book club, participated in literary competitions or discussions, or volunteered at your local library, mentioning those would strengthen your application.

My own child listed reading as one of her extracurricular activities, but she also participated in a book club and won a state-level writing competition. By showing a depth of engagement with reading, colleges will recognize your passion and consider it an asset. So don't hesitate to include reading on your list of activities, but try to highlight other related experiences to make a stronger impression. Best of luck with your applications!
