Just curious, does anyone know any fun or interesting facts about the University of Houston? As a junior considering U of H, I'd love to know some cool trivia that might not be found on their website.
Did you know that the University of Houston has its own underground "city"? This mini-city is actually a network of underground tunnels connecting various buildings on campus. Students can use these tunnels to get from one building to another without having to deal with rain, heat, or other adverse weather conditions. These tunnels also house various maintenance facilities, offices, and storage rooms as well!
Another fun fact is about Shasta, the school's mascot, who's a Cougar. U of H used to have a live cougar as their mascot. Shasta I was the first cougar who arrived on campus in 1947 and quickly became a popular attraction. In total, there were five live Shastas before the tradition was discontinued in 1989. Now, Shasta is represented by a costumed human mascot.
The University of Houston is also renowned for its top-notch entrepreneurship program. The Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship at the Bauer College of Business consistently ranks among the best undergraduate entrepreneurship programs in the nation. Fun fact, U of H hosts an annual Wolffest, a culinary event where students pitch creative food concepts, manage teams, and demonstrate real-world business skills, with proceeds benefiting scholarships and program expenses.
Finally, U of H is home to the Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, which is one of the best hospitality programs in the world. The campus includes its own Hilton Hotel, and students get to have hands-on experience by shadowing and working in the hotel's various departments. This helps them learn the industry from the inside while studying.
There's quite a lot to discover about the University of Houston, and I hope you enjoy uncovering all those interesting tidbits as you consider applying!
