Is the ACT really that hard?

Hey ACT veterans! I've heard a lot of stories about how tough the ACT can be, but I'm still trying to gauge how hard it is compared to the SAT. Can anyone give me some insight? Is it as hard as they say?

Hey there! The difficulty of the ACT can be quite subjective and varies from person to person. Some students find the ACT harder than the SAT, while others find it easier. Ultimately, it depends on your individual strengths, weaknesses, and preferences.

The ACT has four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science, whereas the SAT has three: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math. The ACT is more of a time-crunch with fewer questions and less time per question compared to the SAT. This can make it challenging for students who struggle with time management.

The ACT Science section is unique, as it tests your ability to interpret data, graphs, and experimental setups. This often intimidates students who are not strong in science. However, it's important to note that this section doesn't necessarily require deep knowledge of scientific concepts; rather, it tests your critical thinking and analytical skills.

The Math section in the ACT covers content up to Pre-Calculus, while the SAT goes up to Algebra II. If you're more comfortable with advanced math concepts, the ACT may be easier for you. On the other hand, the Reading sections are similar in both tests, though the ACT has slightly shorter passages and questions on a time-limit.

One key difference is the optional ACT Writing section (an essay), which is scored separately from the composite score. The SAT used to have a similar optional essay, but it was discontinued in 2021.

In summary, the difficulty of the ACT compared to the SAT depends on your individual skills and preferences. To gauge which test is better suited for you, consider taking a full-length, timed practice test for both the ACT and SAT. This will give you a better understanding of the format, timing, and content, and help you make an informed decision about which test to pursue. Good luck!
