Research Science Institute Summer Programs

Hello! While I haven't personally participated in the Research Science Institute (RSI) summer program, I can give you some insight on the application process and experiences from students who have participated.

RSI is a highly prestigious and selective summer program that takes place at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It's intended for high school students who are exceptionally gifted in STEM fields and is completely free (including room, board, and materials) for those who are accepted. Participants engage in cutting-edge scientific research, work alongside brilliant peers, and get mentored by distinguished researchers.

The application process is competitive, with the acceptance rate being around 3-4%. Here are some key factors that successful RSI applicants typically demonstrate:

1. Strong academic performance: RSI looks for students with excellent grades, particularly in advanced STEM courses.

2. Test scores: Students applying to RSI are required to submit any standardized test scores they may have received, including the SAT, PSAT, ACT, and AP exams. Students are highly encouraged to take the PSAT. PSAT Math scores should be 740 or higher, while Evidence-Based Reading and Writing should be at 700 or higher. ACT math should be at least 33 and verbal at least 34.

3. Research experience: Having prior experience in a research lab or participating in scientific competitions, like ISEF, can strengthen your application.

4. Recommendations: RSI requires recommendations from your math and science teachers. Make sure they know you well and are able to speak to your passion, skill, and potential in STEM.
