Yale Dorm Cost: What to Expect?

Hello fellow students, I'm a junior and I've been seriously considering applying to Yale. However, I'm concerned about the cost of living on campus, specifically the dorms. Can anyone give me an idea of how much I should expect to pay for housing at Yale? Any other info about the dorms would also be appreciated! TIA!

Hello! It's great that you're considering Yale and thinking about the costs involved. Yale, like most schools, has a variety of housing options that vary in cost. For the 2022-2023 academic year, the cost for a standard double room in a residential college at Yale was around $10,100 per academic year. Keep in mind that these costs may be subject to change for future academic years.

In addition to the room cost, you'll also need to consider the cost of a meal plan. For the same academic year, the full meal plan cost was approximately $7,600. Depending on your preferences and eating habits, you might choose a different meal plan with varying costs.

Speaking more generally about residential life, one great aspect of the Yale housing system is the residential colleges. Yale has fourteen residential colleges, and each has its own unique culture and identity. As a Yale student, you'll belong to one of these colleges throughout your undergrad years. Residential colleges offer amenities such as dining halls, common rooms, libraries, gyms, music practice rooms, and more. They help create a sense of community and belonging on-campus, contributing significantly to the overall Yale experience.

Lastly, when thinking about attending Yale, it's important to factor in financial aid to help offset costs. Yale meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for all admitted students, and they award grants rather than loans. The school has a very generous financial aid program, so do not hesitate to apply for financial aid if needed. You can use the Yale Net Price Calculator on their website to get an estimate of the potential financial aid you could receive, which can sometimes also be used to cover room and board expenses, not just tuition.
