What's considered a good ACT writing score?

Hey everyone, I recently took the ACT and got my scores back. I'm not sure how to interpret my writing score, though. Can someone explain what's considered a good score on the ACT writing section? Thanks!

A good ACT Writing score can mean different things depending on the colleges you're applying to and what they generally consider competitive. The ACT Writing section is scored on a scale of 2-12, with 12 being the highest possible score. Your score is given by two graders who each assign a score from 1-6 based on four domains: Ideas & Analysis, Development & Support, Organization, and Language Use & Conventions. The scores from both graders are then added together to get your final score.

Generally speaking, a score of 8 or above is considered good, while a score of 10 or higher is considered to be quite competitive. It's worth noting that not all colleges place a significant emphasis on the ACT Writing section, and many focus more on your composite ACT score and other elements of your application. However, if you're applying to selective schools or programs that specifically emphasize writing ability, having a strong writing score may be beneficial.

To better understand how your score aligns with the expectations of the colleges you're interested in, you can usually find a range of ACT Writing scores for admitted students on the school's website or by contacting their admissions office. Keep in mind that while your ACT Writing score may be a factor in the admissions process, it is not the primary determinant. It's important to focus on developing a well-rounded application that showcases your academic and extracurricular strengths.
