What's considered a good TOEFL score?

Hey everyone! I'm an international student and I'm required to take the TOEFL for my college applications. Can you guys help me understand what a good TOEFL score is and what score I should aim for to have a competitive application to top colleges?

Hello! It's important to know that the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is designed to measure your English proficiency rather than your competitiveness as an applicant. However, I can definitely help you understand what a good TOEFL score is for top colleges.

The TOEFL is scored from 0 to 120, with each of the four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing) worth a maximum of 30 points. To be considered competitive at top colleges, it is generally recommended to achieve a minimum overall score of 100, with at least 22-24 points in each section. Many highly selective schools may require scores of around 105 or higher, with individual section minimums of 25 or more.

That being said, achieving a high TOEFL score can meet the college's minimum language requirement and may even provide some edge, but it is not the most critical part of your application. Admissions officers at top colleges care more about factors such as your academic performance, extracurricular activities, essays, and letters of recommendation. Make sure to focus on those aspects in addition to obtaining a solid TOEFL score.

Here's a tip: research each school's language requirement on their admissions website to gain a better understanding of their specific expectations. This will give you a more accurate target to aim for while preparing for the exam.

Good luck with your TOEFL preparation and college applications!
