UC Santa Barbara requirements: what do I need to get in?

Hey everyone! As a high school junior, UC Santa Barbara is one of my dream schools. Does anyone know about the general requirements they have for admission? GPA, extracurriculars, personal statement... anything that could bring me a step closer to getting in?

Hello! UC Santa Barbara is a great choice, and it's good that you're starting to think about their requirements now. Let's break down the different aspects of your application that UCSB will be considering:

1. GPA: UCSB, being a part of the UC system, primarily looks at your UC weighted GPA. The average admitted student in recent years has had a GPA around 4.13. While this is just an average, keep in mind that your GPA is an important part of your application, so aim for the highest possible.

2. Course Rigor: Along with your GPA, the courses you take matter. UCSB values students who have challenged themselves with a rigorous course load, including AP, IB, or honors courses. Try to take the most challenging classes available to you and perform well in them.

3. Extracurricular Activities: UCSB, like most colleges, values extracurricular activities that demonstrate your commitment, passion, and leadership. Focus on developing a few activities that align with your interests and showcase your strengths. Aim for higher tier activities and try to hold leadership roles within them.

4. Personal Insight Questions: UC schools, including UCSB, require applicants to answer Personal Insight Questions (PIQs) instead of one personal statement. You'll need to choose four out of eight PIQ prompts, and each response must be 350 words or less. Use these essays to provide a broader picture of who you are, highlighting experiences and qualities that are not evident in other parts of your application. Be authentic and focus on unique, personal stories.

5. Test Scores: UC schools, including UCSB, are currently test-blind, meaning they do not review SAT or ACT scores at all during the admission process.

6. A-G Requirements: Ensure you have completed the A-G requirements, which are subject requirements for students applying to UC and CSU schools. This includes specific courses in history/social science, English, mathematics, laboratory science, language other than English, visual and performing arts, and college-prep electives.

7. Special Talents and Achievements: If you have any accomplishments that go beyond your typical school activities, be sure to highlight them in your application, as they can differentiate you from other applicants.

Remember that while these elements are all important, UCSB takes a holistic approach in evaluating applications. So, strive for a well-rounded application that highlights your strengths and character. Good luck!
