What do I need to do to get into Rutgers?

Hi everyone! Rutgers is my dream school and I want to know all I can about the admissions process. What are they looking for in terms of GPA, test scores, and extracurricular activities? Any tips or insider knowledge would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there! Rutgers University is a great choice, and I'm glad to help you understand their admissions process. While I can't give you any advice that guarantees admission, I can provide you with an overview of what they generally look for in applicants:

1. GPA: Rutgers takes your high school record seriously. They evaluate the rigor of your courses and your performance. A competitive GPA would be above a 3.5 (unweighted) on a 4.0 scale, but keep in mind that GPA requirements vary by school within the university and specific programs. Strive to take the most challenging courses available to you.

2. Test Scores: Rutgers is test-optional for most applicants entering Fall 2023 and beyond, which means that you can choose whether or not to submit SAT or ACT scores. If you do submit scores, aim for an SAT score above 1300 or an ACT score above 28 to be competitive. Remember, though, that your application will still be evaluated without test scores.

3. Extracurricular Activities: Rutgers looks for students who make a meaningful impact in their community or have a demonstration of leadership, passion, or commitment. They seek students with a "spike," which is a highly-developed specialty in a specific area. Top extracurricular activities will showcase your unique interests and achievements, so aim for a few Tier 1-2 activities (national or state-level distinction, leadership roles). Quality over quantity is important.

4. Essays: Rutgers requires a personal statement, and it gives you an opportunity to showcase your personality, experiences, and what makes you stand out. Avoid cliché topics and focus on telling a story that is unique to you. Your essay should highlight any challenges you've faced, your background, or how contributions you'll make to the Rutgers campus community.

5. Letters of Recommendation: While Rutgers does not require letters of recommendation for general admission, some specific programs may have additional requirements. Check the requirements for specific programs you're interested in, and if applicable, choose recommenders who know you well and can speak to your strengths.

6. Application Timeliness: Submitting your application early can demonstrate interest and give you the best chance of admission: Rutgers offers both Early Action (non-binding) and Regular Decision. Early Action deadline is November 1st, and Regular Decision deadline is December 1st.

Overall, Rutgers is looking for well-rounded applicants who showcase their strengths and are academically prepared for the challenges of university life. Research the specific school or program within Rutgers you're interested in, as they may have additional recommendations or requirements. Good luck!
