Considering a major in computer game design, any advice?

Hi everyone! I've been really interested in computer game design lately, and I'm seriously considering it as my major in college. Can anyone give me some advice on what to expect in this field, and maybe suggest some colleges that have a strong program in computer game design? Thanks!

Hi! It's fantastic that you're interested in pursuing computer game design as a major in college. This field has a lot of potential and can be both creatively fulfilling and financially rewarding.

Computer game design combines coding, art, storytelling, and design principles to create engaging and interactive experiences for players. Therefore, you can expect to take a mix of courses in computer programming, graphics, game design theory, and other relevant subjects. Some programs also focus on collaboration, as many games are designed and developed by teams with diverse backgrounds and skill sets.

As for schools with strong programs in computer game design, here are a few that come highly recommended:

1. University of Southern California (USC) - Their Interactive Media & Games Division is well-known for providing a top-notch education in this field. They offer a range of programs, including a Bachelor of Arts in Interactive Entertainment and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (Games).

2. Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) - Their Integrated Innovation Institute offers a Bachelor of Computer Science and Arts (BCSA) program, with a concentration in Game Design. This program gives you a strong foundation in both computer science and fine arts.

3. Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) - RIT's B. Sc. in Game Design and Development program is well-regarded and combines technical skills with creativity, design, and team-based coursework.

4. DigiPen Institute of Technology - This college specializes in programs related to game design, offering a B.S. in Computer Science and Game Design, which combines computer programming skills with game design principles and storytelling.

5. New York University (NYU) - Their Tisch School of the Arts has a B.F.A. in Game Design program that emphasizes the creative and technical aspects of designing and developing interactive experiences.

Keep in mind that there are several other schools with great programs as well, so make sure you research and find the one that best fits your interests and needs. Additionally, it's a good idea to explore your options for internships or work placements while you're in school, as these opportunities will allow you to gain real-world experience and make valuable connections in the industry.

Best of luck on your journey in computer game design!
