Caltech SAT Requirements?

Hey everyone, I'm a junior thinking about applying to California Institute of Technology. What are Caltech's SAT score requirements? Do they prefer higher math and science scores?

Caltech is a highly selective institution, and while they do not have a strict SAT score cutoff, they do have competitive expectations for applicants. As of the 2024-2025 application cycle, Caltech is no longer test-optional and requires all applicants to submit either an SAT or ACT score.

To be a competitive applicant at Caltech, you should aim for a high SAT score. Based on previous years' admitted student profiles, the middle 50% SAT score range for admitted students was roughly 1530 to 1580 out of 1600. Achieving a score within or above this range would make your application more competitive.

It's also important to keep in mind that Caltech has a strong focus on STEM fields, so performing well in the Math section of the SAT would be beneficial. A high score in the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section is also essential to show strong overall academic ability. While Caltech does value high math and science scores, both sections of the SAT are considered in their holistic review process.

In addition to your SAT score, Caltech will evaluate your entire profile, including your transcript, GPA, extracurricular activities, essays, and letters of recommendation. It's crucial to excel in these areas in order to have a well-rounded and competitive application.

Good luck, and remember that while SAT scores are important, they're just one aspect of your application!
