What is the maximum ACT score?

I'm planning to take the ACT soon, and I'm just wondering what the highest possible score is. How is the scoring scale structured, and what should I aim for to be considered competitive for top colleges?

The maximum ACT score is 36. The ACT consists of four sections: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. Each section is scored on a scale of 1-36, and the composite score (which is the one most often referenced) is the average of these four section scores. It's important to note that decimals are rounded to the nearest whole number when calculating the composite score.

To be considered competitive for top colleges, it's generally recommended to aim for a composite score of 30 or above. However, the more selective the college, the higher their average admitted student ACT score tends to be. For example, Ivy League schools typically have average ACT scores in the 32-36 range for their admitted students.

It's also worth noting that test scores are just one part of a holistic admissions process, and while a high score can certainly strengthen your application, other factors like your coursework rigor, grades, extracurricular involvement, essays, and letters of recommendation will play significant roles as well.

Keep in mind that some colleges and universities have transitioned to test-optional or test-blind admissions policies. Be sure to research the specific testing requirements for the schools you're interested in.

To prepare for the ACT, consider taking practice tests, enrolling in a prep course, or working with a tutor. Familiarizing yourself with the test format and practicing under timed conditions can help improve your test-taking skills and increase your chances of achieving a competitive score. Good luck!
