Which is better: volunteer work or internships?

I was just wondering which looks better on college applications: volunteering for a cause I'm passionate about or pursuing an internship related to my intended major? I only have time for one, and I want to make the best decision. Thanks!

Hey there! Both volunteer work and internships have their merits and can make a strong impact on college applications. It really depends on your specific situation and interests.

Volunteering for a cause you're passionate about can show dedication, commitment, and good character. You'll also get the personal satisfaction of making a difference. My own child volunteered at a local animal shelter, and it proved to be a highly rewarding experience.

On the other hand, internships related to your intended major could be extremely beneficial, as they provide hands-on experience and demonstrate your passion for the field. They are also more selective, so they will look more impressive. For example, my child's friend pursued a marketing internship that helped them gain valuable skills and connections.

Ultimately, the choice depends on your personal goals, values, and interests. Spending time doing something you genuinely care about and are committed to can be more impactful than choosing one over the other just for the sake of appearances.
