What type of math is on the SAT?

Hey guys, I'm planning to take the SAT soon and wanted to know what kind of math topics I should expect on the test. Can anyone enlighten me on the specific math areas I should focus on while studying?

The math section of the SAT covers a range of topics, primarily focusing on algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, some geometry, and a few trigonometry concepts. Below are the main areas you should concentrate on while studying for the SAT math section:

1. Heart of Algebra: This area focuses on linear equations, inequalities, and systems of linear equations, and includes topics like interpreting and solving linear equations and inequalities, creating linear expressions, understanding graphing and slope, and working with systems of linear equations.

2. Problem-Solving and Data Analysis: This section is all about interpreting and analyzing data from tables, graphs, and data sets. You'll need to work with ratios, rates, and proportions, understand percentages, work with scatterplots and graphs, and analyze categorical and quantitative data.

3. Passport to Advanced Math: In this section, you'll work with more complex algebraic expressions and equations, such as quadratic, exponential, and polynomial functions. This involves solving and manipulating complex expressions, understanding function notation, and working with nonlinear equations and inequalities.

4. Additional Topics in Math: This section covers various other math concepts, including geometry and trigonometry. For geometry, you'll encounter triangles, rectangles, and circles, as well as their properties (e.g., Pythagorean theorem, area, and volume). For trigonometry, you'll mainly deal with right triangle trigonometry, sine, cosine, tangent, and basic trigonometric identities.

Remember that the SAT allows you to use a calculator on one of the two math modules. A strong grasp of calculator functions and their appropriate use will be helpful in solving certain problems more efficiently.

To prepare, consider taking practice tests and working on math problems from each of these areas. The College Board provides a number of resources to help you practice, including sample questions and full-length practice tests. Good luck with your preparation!
