Understanding the PSAT test in high school

I've heard about the PSAT test that high school students take, but I'm not exactly sure what it is. Can anyone provide some background on the purpose of the PSAT and why it's important?

The PSAT, which stands for Preliminary SAT, is a standardized test that serves as a practice exam for the SAT and is typically taken by high school students in their sophomore or junior year. The PSAT is administered by the College Board, the organization that also administers the SAT. The main purposes of the PSAT are to provide students with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the SAT format and question types, to gauge their strengths and weaknesses, and to help them prepare for the actual SAT.

Another important aspect of the PSAT is its role in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
