Determining a good SAT score

I'm currently preparing for the SAT and I'm wondering what is considered a really good SAT score? Are there any benchmarks I should aim for that would help me get into competitive colleges?

A really good SAT score is one that falls at or above the 75th percentile for the colleges you are targeting. Competitive colleges typically have higher SAT score requirements, so it's important to research the average scores for admitted students at your desired schools. Here are some general benchmarks to consider:

1. Top-tier colleges (Ivy Leagues and equivalent): For these schools, you should aim for an SAT score of around 1500 or higher to be competitive. A perfect score of 1600 can certainly boost your application but is not necessary for admission.

2. Highly-selective colleges (ranked between 20-50 nationally): Aiming for a score between 1400-1500 would place you in a strong position for these institutions.

3. Selective colleges (ranked between 50-100 nationally): A score of 1300-1400 would generally be considered competitive.

Keep in mind that these are just general guidelines. You should research the specific score ranges for the colleges you're interested in, as requirements vary greatly. College admissions websites often provide the middle 50% score ranges of admitted students which can be a useful guide.

Additionally, don't forget that your SAT score is just one component of your college application. While a strong SAT score can be helpful, top colleges are looking for well-rounded applications that showcase not only academic ability but also extracurricular involvement, leadership, and personal qualities.

Lastly, it's important to note that many selective colleges have adopted test-optional policies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on standardized testing. Some of these policies are still in place, so make sure to check each college's testing policy before submitting your scores.
