What SAT scores are required for National Merit Scholarships?

Hey everyone, I'm aiming for a National Merit Scholarship, but I'm not sure what SAT score I should be aiming for. Does anyone know the general score range that's required to be considered for National Merit scholarships?

To qualify for the National Merit Scholarship, you'll actually need to focus on your PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) score, rather than your SAT score. The PSAT/NMSQT is used by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) to determine eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

You'll want to aim for a high score on the PSAT/NMSQT as it serves as the initial screening for National Merit Scholarship Program participants. After taking the PSAT/NMSQT, you'll receive a Selection Index score, which is calculated by doubling the sum of your Math, Reading, and Writing test scores. To give you an idea of the score range needed, the cutoff scores for National Merit Semifinalist consideration vary by state and usually range between 212 and 222, as each state has its own cutoff score based on the top 1% of scorers.

Keep in mind that these cutoff scores can fluctuate each year, depending on the performance of students in your state. Once you qualify as a Semifinalist, most Semifinalists become National Merit Finalists when they submit SAT scores that confirm their earlier PSAT/NMSQT performance.
