NMSQT Commended Scholar: How to Achieve?

Can someone explain how to become an NMSQT Commended Scholar? What kind of scores or percentiles on the PSAT do I need to aim for? It would be amazing to have this recognition when applying to colleges.

To become an NMSQT Commended Scholar, you'll need to achieve a high score on the PSAT/NMSQT, which is usually taken in your junior year of high school. The minimum qualifying scores vary each year, depending mainly on the performance of the overall test-takers, but they are generally around the 95th to 96th percentile range.

Commended Scholar cutoff scores differ from those for National Merit Semifinalists, which are typically higher and vary by state. Commended Scholar cutoff scores, however, are the same across all states. Although specific cutoffs change annually, recent years have seen cutoffs around 209 to 212.

Here are some strategies to help you prepare and increase your chances of becoming an NMSQT Commended Scholar:

1. Familiarize yourself with the test format: Familiarize yourself with the structure and question types of the digital PSAT/NMSQT. The test includes two 32-minute modules for Reading and Writing, and two 35-minute modules for Math.

2. Practice consistently: Use resources like the Bluebook™ app, official College Board practice materials, or other reputable test prep materials to take full-length practice tests and focus on sections where you need improvement.

3. Focus on weak areas: Identify areas where you're struggling, and dedicate additional time and resources to develop those skills.

4. Work on time management: Make sure you practice answering questions quickly and effectively, while keeping in mind that you have 71 seconds per question for Reading and Writing, and 96 seconds per question for Math sections.

5. Learn test-taking strategies: Study effective techniques for the digital PSAT/NMSQT, such as process of elimination, skimming passages for crucial information, and double-checking your work.

6. Seek additional help: If needed, consider using a tutor, joining a test prep course, or partnering with a study group to help improve your understanding of the subject matter and test-taking tactics.

Remember that while being an NMSQT Commended Scholar is a notable achievement, it's just one part of your college application. Focus on displaying a well-rounded profile that includes strong academics, well-developed extracurriculars, and compelling essays, and don't worry too much if you don't earn the Commended Scholar distinction - there are lots of other ways to stand out. Best of luck on your journey to becoming an NMSQT Commended Scholar!
