PSAT Index - How does it work?

Hey everyone, I'm pretty curious about how the PSAT Index works. I know it plays a role in determining National Merit Scholarships, but what exactly does it measure, and how should I interpret my own PSAT Index score?

Hello! The PSAT Index, also known as the Selection Index, is important for determining eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program. It's a composite score calculated using your PSAT scores in three sections: Evidence-Based Reading, Writing and Language, and Math.

Here's how to calculate your Selection Index:

1. First, take your Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW) section score and your Math section score. Keep in mind that both of these scores are on a scale from 160 to 760.

2. Add your ERW score and Math score together to find your total PSAT score (out of 1520).

3. Divide your total PSAT score by 10 to obtain your individual section scores (each ranging from 16 to 76).

4. Add these two individual section scores together and then multiply the sum by 2.

The result is your Selection Index, which ranges from 48 to 228.

Your Selection Index plays a key role in determining if you qualify for the National Merit program. Each state has its own cutoff Selection Index score for eligibility, which varies annually. If your Selection Index meets or exceeds your state's cutoff, you'll be recognized as a Semifinalist and have the opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships.

If you want to estimate your chances of qualifying for the National Merit program, compare your Selection Index to the previous years' cutoffs in your state. Keep in mind that these cutoffs can fluctuate slightly each year, but it should give you a good idea of where you stand.

Good luck, and I hope this information helps you understand your PSAT Index score and its significance in the National Merit Scholarship competition!
