How long does the ACT take?

Hey everyone! I'm planning to take the ACT soon and I'm curious about how long it lasts. How many hours should I expect to spend at the testing center?

Hi there! The ACT is composed of four sections—English, Math, Reading, and Science—with an optional Writing section. Here's a breakdown of the timing for each section:

1. English: 45 minutes (75 questions)

2. Math: 60 minutes (60 questions)

3. Reading: 35 minutes (40 questions)

4. Science: 35 minutes (40 questions)

If you're taking the ACT without the Writing section, you can expect to spend around 2 hours and 55 minutes on the test itself. However, you'll also have a 10-15 minute break after the Math section, and you should account for time spent on pre-test instructions and check-in procedures. In total, you can expect to be at the testing center for approximately 3.5-4 hours if you're not taking the Writing section.

For those taking the ACT with Writing, the Writing section adds an extra 40 minutes to the test. With the additional break and Writing section, you'll be at the testing center for approximately 4.5-5 hours.

Make sure you arrive well before the designated start time and bring the required documentation and materials, such as your admission ticket, photo ID, approved calculator, and pencils. Good luck on your ACT!
