What's the minimum NMSC Selection Index score?

Hello! So I just took the PSAT and I want to know what the minimum NMSC Selection Index score is to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. Does this score vary by state or is it the same nationwide?

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) uses the Selection Index score to determine eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The Selection Index score is calculated by doubling the sum of your Reading, Writing and Language, and Math test scores from the PSAT. The maximum Selection Index score you can receive is 228.

The minimum Selection Index score required to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship does vary by state and changes slightly each year based on the students' performance in that particular year. This is because the top 1% of students, in terms of PSAT scores, from each state are recognized as Semifinalists. The Selection Index score necessary to qualify as a Semifinalist usually falls within the range of 209 to 223, depending on the competitiveness of your state.

It's important to remember that being a Semifinalist doesn't guarantee receiving a National Merit Scholarship - this is just the first step. Semifinalists will need to submit an application, which includes their academic record, extracurriculars, and an essay. From the Semifinalists, around 15,000 students are chosen as Finalists. About 7,500 of these Finalists will ultimately receive National Merit Scholarship awards based on their achievements and potential for success in college and beyond.

Simply put, the minimum NMSC Selection Index score to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship varies by state, and you'll need to keep an eye on your state's cutoff score for the year you took the PSAT to be certain of your eligibility.
