How Good is a 1400 SAT Score?

Just got my SAT scores back and I scored 1400. I'm curious to know if that's considered a strong score? What kind of colleges should I aim for with this score? Thanks in advance!

A 1400 SAT score is indeed a strong score. To put it in perspective, it places you in approximately the 94th percentile of test-takers, meaning you scored better than about 94% of students who took the SAT. With a 1400, you're in a competitive range for a variety of colleges and universities, which shows your readiness for college-level coursework.

The types of colleges you should aim for will depend on other aspects of your application, such as your GPA, extracurricular involvement, and essays. However, with a 1400, you might consider exploring mid-tier to top-tier colleges, as your score is typically above the average for many state schools but may be slightly below the average for some of the most selective schools.

To get a better sense of which schools are within your range, consider researching their middle 50% SAT score ranges, which represent the SAT scores of the middle 50% of admitted students. If your score falls within or above a school's middle 50% range, you're in the ballpark academically, although college admissions take other factors into account as well.

Remember that the college application process is holistic, meaning that your SAT score is just one component of your overall application. Be sure to focus on other areas too, such as your coursework rigor, GPA, extracurricular activities, and essays. The better-rounded your application is, the more selective the colleges you can target with a 1400 SAT score.

Best of luck with your college application process!
