Applying to Columbia University

Can anyone here with experience in the Columbia University application process give me an idea of how to get in? I'd appreciate any insight y'all could share, like recommendations for extracurriculars, test scores, essays, etc. Thanks in advance!

While I can't speak from firsthand experience, I can provide some guidance for approaching the Columbia University application process.

1. Academics: Maintain a high GPA and take a rigorous course load, including AP, IB, or honors courses. For the 2024-2025 cycle, Columbia requires submission of SAT or ACT scores. Make sure your scores are competitive, typically within the middle 50% range (SAT: ~1440-1570, ACT: ~33-35). Although test scores aren't the only factor, they play an essential role in how Columbia evaluates your academic readiness.

2. Extracurriculars: Aim to have a strong commitment to and involvement in activities that showcase your leadership, your passions, or your dedication to your community. It's better to excel in a few extracurriculars than to dabble in many. A diverse portfolio should showcase at least one or two Tier 1 or Tier 2 activities, such as being a national award-winner in a competition, holding a leadership role in a significant organization, or demonstrating major achievements in your chosen areas.

3. Essays:Put a lot of effort into your application essays, especially on the supplements tailored to Columbia. For the "Why Columbia" essay, take the time to research the university in-depth, connecting your interests and experiences to specific resources, programs, clubs, and academic offerings. Avoid cliches; make it personal and unique to you. Breaking into ingenuity can make your essays stand out in the competitive applicant pool.

4. Letters of Recommendation: Request recommendation letters from teachers, counselors, or mentors who know you well and can speak to your character, work ethic, and academic potential. These individuals should be able to provide insights about you that aren't immediately apparent from the rest of your application.

5. Demonstrated Interest: Although Columbia does not officially consider demonstrated interest, attending virtual events, engaging with current students, or connecting with admissions representatives can benefit you indirectly. These interactions can give you a better understanding of the campus culture and academic environment, which you can reflect in your application essays.

6. Spike: Focus on developing your "spike," or your field of specialization. Top colleges, including Columbia, tend to prefer applicants with strong achievements in a specific field, as opposed to merely well-rounded students.

7. Challenging Yourself: Columbia is looking for students who have consistently challenged themselves in high school, seeking opportunities to grow academically and personally. To convey this, highlight examples of resilience, grit, and ambition in your application.

Remember that there's no formula or guaranteed path to admission, but by focusing on these areas, you can create a strong application that truly represents your abilities and potential. Good luck!
