National Average for SAT?

What's up everyone! I want to have some context for my SAT scores, so I'm curious about the national average for SAT. Can someone tell me what it is? And how do colleges usually look at these national averages when evaluating applicants?

Hello! The national average SAT score can vary slightly from year to year, but as of 2023, the average combined score is around 1060. This includes roughly 528 for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and 532 for Math. These numbers can give you an idea of how your own scores compare to those of your peers.

Colleges usually don't explicitly compare individual applicants' SAT scores to the national average when evaluating applicants. Instead, they consider each applicant's test scores within the context of their academic performance, extracurricular involvement, essays, and other aspects of the application. However, a good SAT score helps demonstrate your readiness for college and can play an important role in the overall evaluation process.

Keep in mind that the importance of your SAT score can vary depending on the schools you're applying to and their admission policies. Some institutions are test-optional, meaning you can choose whether to submit your scores or not, while others may require them. It's essential to research the specific admission requirements and policies for each college on your list to understand how your SAT score might be considered.

While the national average can be a helpful reference point, it's important to focus on the average scores for admitted students at the colleges you're targeting. Many college websites provide a middle 50% range of SAT scores for their admitted students, giving you a better idea of the scores typically accepted at those schools.
