PSAT/NMSQT Semifinalist Cutoffs?

Hey guys! I recently got my PSAT/NMSQT scores and I'm trying to figure out my chances of becoming a semifinalist. How are the cutoffs determined, and do they change from year to year?

Hello! PSAT/NMSQT semifinalist cutoffs are determined by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), and they're based on the Selection Index (SI) scores of students in each state. The Selection Index is calculated by doubling the sum of your Reading, Writing and Language, and Math scores, giving a range from 48 to 228.

Cutoffs do change from year to year, as they're based on the top 1% of students in each state who took the PSAT/NMSQT. This means that the exact cutoff for each state may vary due to fluctuations in student performance. Historically, these changes have not been drastic from one year to the next, but they can shift up or down a few points.

While it's not possible to predict the exact cutoff score for this year, you can look at previous years' scores as a general benchmark. Keep in mind, states with a higher population density and a greater number of high-scoring students tend to have higher cutoffs.

Ultimately, you'll have to wait for the official confirmation from NMSC about the cutoff scores and the list of semifinalists. This is usually announced in the following September after you have taken the PSAT/NMSQT.

Good luck, and I hope you become a semifinalist!
