Does anyone have experience applying for FAFSA with divorced parents?

My parents have been divorced for a few years, and I'm unsure how to navigate the FAFSA process. Should I list both of their incomes, or just one? Would really appreciate some advice from someone with similar experience.

Hey there! I understand that applying for FAFSA with divorced parents can be confusing, but don't worry, I'll help clarify the process for you. As for listing their incomes, you only need to report the income of the custodial parent, which is the one you've lived with the most during the past 12 months. If you've lived with both parents equally, you'll list the income of the parent who has provided more financial support during that time.

Take note that if your custodial parent has remarried, you'll also need to include the step-parent's income and information on the FAFSA. The key here is to ensure the information provided is accurate and up-to-date to avoid any complications in receiving financial aid.

In my experience, as my child went through the same situation, it helped to communicate openly with both parents to gather all the necessary information. Keep in mind that the FAFSA process might be overwhelming at first, but with patience, you'll get through it. Good luck!
