How are National Merit Scholars chosen?

Hey, could anyone explain the process of being selected as a National Merit Scholar? I've been hearing a lot about it, and I'm curious about the criteria, steps, and benefits associated with it. Any input would be great!

National Merit Scholarships are prestigious awards that recognize high-achieving high school students in the United States. The process starts with the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) and goes through several stages before final winners are selected. Here's an overview of the process:

1. Take the PSAT/NMSQT: High school juniors (11th grade) take the PSAT/NMSQT, typically in October. This test serves as the initial screening for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

2. Determine the Selection Index: From the PSAT/NMSQT scores, a Selection Index is calculated using the sum of the test's Reading, Writing & Language, and Math scores, each multiplied by two. The highest possible Selection Index is 228.

3. Meet the state's Selection Index cutoff: Based on the Selection Index, students who score at or above their state's cutoff score (which may vary from year to year) qualify as Semifinalists. About 16,000 students nationwide become Semifinalists, representing roughly the top 1% of test takers.

4. Submit the National Merit Scholarship Application: Semifinalists are invited to submit a National Merit Scholarship Application, which includes their high school record, a personal essay, and a list of their extracurricular activities and achievements. Semifinalists must also have a high school official write a recommendation.

5. Advance to Finalist standing: In February, approximately 15,000 Semifinalists are notified that they've advanced to Finalist standing. Finalists must meet additional requirements, such as a consistently strong academic record and SAT scores that confirm their PSAT/NMSQT performance.

6. Award Winners: In March, around 7,500 Finalists are selected as National Merit Scholars based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments indicated in the application materials. Three types of National Merit Scholarships are awarded: the $2,500 National Merit Scholarship, corporate-sponsored scholarships, and college-sponsored scholarships.

It's important to note that not all Finalists receive a scholarship, but being a National Merit Scholar can have significant benefits, including scholarship money, recognition by colleges, and potential access to supplementary financial aid or merit scholarships at certain universities. Being named a National Merit Scholar can boost your college application and provide future opportunities for academic and professional growth.
