Why isn't MIT considered an Ivy League School?

I've always thought that MIT is one of the most prestigious schools in the country, but I recently found out that it's not an Ivy League institution. Can anyone explain why MIT isn't part of the Ivy League and what sets it apart?

Great question! To put it simply, the Ivy League is an athletic conference and it consists of eight schools: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth, Penn, and Cornell. These schools are known for their academic excellence and historic significance, which is part of the reason why they are often referred to as prestigious.

MIT, on the other hand, while equally prestigious and academically renowned, is not part of this group because it was not part of the athletic conference when it was established in 1954. Nevertheless, MIT is well-known for their strong focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, and many would argue that it surpasses some of the Ivy League schools in these areas.

In conclusion, the Ivy League distinction refers more to the historic and athletic aspects of these schools, while MIT's reputation is built on their academic strengths in STEM fields. Both the Ivy League schools and MIT provide top-notch education and offer unique opportunities for students.
