UC Berkeley GPA?

Hi everyone, I'm a junior targeting UC Berkeley as one of my top choices. What kind of GPA do I need to be competitive for admission? Also, do they consider weighted or unweighted GPA? Thanks for any input!

Hello! UC Berkeley is a highly competitive school, so having a strong GPA is definitely important. The average unweighted high school GPA for admitted students at UC Berkeley tends to be around 3.89, whereas for weighted GPA, it's around 4.45. Keep in mind that these are just averages, and some students might be slightly above or below these numbers.

UC Berkeley does consider both unweighted and weighted GPAs. The unweighted GPA involves considering only your grades on a 4.0 scale, while the weighted GPA takes into account any honors, AP, or IB courses you've taken, allowing grades to be on a scale up to 5.0. So, excelling in a rigorous course load can increase your chances of admission.

However, UC Berkeley, like other UC schools, uses a specific weighted and capped GPA for their admissions process. This means they only count a maximum of eight semesters of honors points, with no more than four semesters from 10th grade. So, for example, if you took six honors or AP courses each in 10th and 11th grade, only four semesters from 10th grade and all six from 11th would be weighted in the calculation.

Remember that UC Berkeley also takes a holistic approach to reviewing applications, so your GPA is just one part of your application. Strong extracurriculars, essays, and letters of recommendation also play an essential role in the application process.

Good luck with your admissions journey!
