What's the structure of the ACT like?

Hey everyone! I just started preparing for the ACT, and I wanted to get a better understanding of the test's structure. Any helpful tips or breakdown of the sections would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hello! The ACT is a standardized test that consists of four required sections and one optional section. Here's a breakdown of each section, including the time allotted and the number of questions:

1. English:

- 45 minutes

- 75 questions

In this section, you'll be tested on grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetoric. You'll work with passages and answer questions related to improving the overall quality of the text.

2. Math:

- 60 minutes

- 60 questions

The Math section covers topics like algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. You'll encounter a variety of problem types, from solving equations to interpreting graphs. You are allowed to use a calculator throughout the entire Math section.

3. Reading:

- 35 minutes

- 40 questions

The Reading section presents passages from various genres, including literary fiction, social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. You'll answer questions related to comprehension, analysis, and synthesis of the texts.

4. Science:

- 35 minutes

- 40 questions

In the Science section, you'll encounter questions that test your skills in interpreting scientific data, analyzing experiments, and understanding scientific concepts. The focus is not memorization, but rather the ability to interpret and reason with scientific information.

5. Writing (optional):

- 40 minutes

- 1 essay prompt

The writing section is optional but recommended for students applying to colleges that require or recommend the essay. You'll be given a prompt with different perspectives on an issue. Your task is to write a clear, concise essay in which you evaluate and analyze the perspectives and develop your own position.

In total, the ACT without the Writing section lasts 2 hours and 55 minutes, while the ACT with Writing lasts 3 hours and 35 minutes. Be sure to practice mock tests under timed conditions to get familiar with the test structure and pace yourself accordingly. Good luck with your preparation!
