Can summer programs help my college application?

Hi everyone! I'm a junior and I'm looking into summer programs to bolster my college application. Do participation in summer programs actually help or make a difference in college admissions? What type of programs should I look for that will be most beneficial? Thanks for any input!

Hi there! Absolutely, participating in summer programs can definitely add value to your college application. They can help you explore your interests, develop new skills, and demonstrate your commitment to growth outside of school. These traits are attractive to college admissions officers.

Choose a program that aligns with your academic interests or future career goals. For instance, if you're interested in engineering, consider attending a robotics or coding camp. If you have a passion for writing and literature, look for creative writing programs or literature-themed workshops. Admissions officers appreciate when a student's application reflects a cohesive narrative, so programs aligned with your interests can bolster your story.

There's no one-size-fits-all answer as to which programs will be most beneficial. Aim for programs that challenge you, offer opportunities for personal and academic development, and are well-regarded. Examples: TASP, Research Science Institutes, Governor's school programs, or local university programs. You could also consider community service programs or obtaining an internship in a relevant field.

Good luck in finding a program that suits you!
