Is a 16 on the ACT bad?

Hey everyone, I just got my ACT scores and I scored a 16. I'm feeling really stressed out right now. Is this score considered bad and should I retake the exam or focus more on other aspects of my application?

A 16 on the ACT is lower than the national average, which is around 21. However, it's important to remember that "good" or "bad" test scores are relative to your target schools and personal goals. If the colleges you're interested in have higher average ACT scores, you should likely retake the exam to increase your chances of admission.

Before you decide on retaking the ACT, take a look at the middle 50% ACT scores of admitted students at your target colleges. If your score falls below that range, it's a strong indication that you should consider retaking the test.

To improve your score, identify the areas where you struggled and create a study plan focusing on those subjects. Take advantage of free resources, like Khan Academy and ACT Academy, or consider getting a tutor, enrolling in a prep course, or studying with peers in a group. Try taking several practice tests to become more comfortable with the format and timing of the exam as well.

In the meantime, focus on strengthening other aspects of your application, such as maintaining a strong GPA, participating in extracurricular activities, and demonstrating leadership. Remember that a lower standardized test score doesn't mean you can't get into a great college. Many schools have adopted test-optional policies, meaning they do not require SAT or ACT scores for admission.

Ultimately, whether you choose to retake the ACT depends on your target colleges and your overall application. It's essential to research the requirements of each school you're interested in and plan accordingly. Good luck!
