Any advice on private universities in Chicago?

As a high school junior, I'm starting to think about college and I want to stay in the Chicago area. I've heard there are some great private universities in Chicago, Illinois. Got any recommendations or advice on how to choose the right one for me?

First, educate yourself on the different private universities in the Chicago area. Two of the most well-known private schools in the city are the University of Chicago (UChicago) and Loyola University Chicago. Other options include DePaul University and Northwestern University (located in nearby Evanston). Each of these institutions has its strengths and unique offerings.

To choose the right university for you, consider the following factors:

1. Program/Major: Research the academic programs each university offers, their respective department rankings, and faculty/student resources. Keep your career interests in mind, and pay attention to your desired major's prominence and focus within each institution.

2. Campus culture: Each university has a unique campus culture and atmosphere. Visit the campuses, if possible, and try to get a feel for the community and student life. Speak to current students and attend college tours to dive deeper into the experience offered by each institution. Be sure to also explore the neighborhoods surrounding each university.

3. Size: Assess the size of each university, as it can impact class sizes, faculty-to-student ratios, and research opportunities. Larger universities might have more resources, while smaller ones may offer individualized attention and close-knit communities.

4. Financial aid: Compare financial aid packages and policies among the universities. Some institutions might have more significant endowments and could offer better financial aid packages. Look for scholarships and grants specific to each university.

5. Graduation rates and career outcomes: Review graduation rates and post-graduation outcomes at each institution. High graduation rates can signal strong support systems, while a university with a robust alumni network and career support can help you find employment or continue your education.

6. Opportunities and extracurriculars: Research clubs, activities, internships, and other unique opportunities each institution offers. Engagement in extracurriculars can greatly enhance your college experience and broaden your network.

Ultimately, choose a university that aligns well with your academic, financial, and personal preferences. Keep in mind the factors mentioned above and make sure to visit the campuses and engage with current students to gain a broader perspective on each one. While they're all located in the same geographic area, they can differ quite a bit in other ways.

Finally, if you end up applying to UChicago or Northwestern and want tips on how to maximize your chances of acceptance, check out these blog posts from CollegeVine, which break down how to tackle their school-specific supplemental essays. UChicago releases new prompts every year, but also allows students to respond to past prompts, and regardless looking at the prompts from last application cycle can give you an initial sense of their (in)famously quirky prompts:
