Middlebury vs Bowdoin

Hey everyone, I'm considering applying to Middlebury and Bowdoin, but I'm not sure which one would be a better fit for me. Can anyone provide some info on the differences between the two schools, like their academics, campus life, and general vibe? Thanks!

Both Middlebury and Bowdoin are excellent liberal arts colleges, but they do have differences in their academics, campus life, and general vibe that could affect your decision.

Academics: Middlebury is known for its strong foreign language and environmental studies programs. In contrast, Bowdoin has a focus on government and legal studies, economics, and the humanities. Thus, the main difference lies in each school's strengths. Middlebury might be a better choice if you're looking to study a foreign language intensely or are passionate about the environment, while Bowdoin offers broader options in social sciences and humanities.

Campus Life: Middlebury is located in a small, more rural Vermont town, which promotes a strong sense of community and offers ample opportunities for outdoor activities like skiing and hiking. Bowdoin, on the other hand, is situated in coastal Brunswick, Maine, which provides a blend of a small-town atmosphere with the nearby attractions in Portland. At Bowdoin, students have easy access to both outdoor activities in the mountains and along the coast, as well as urban options in Portland.

General Vibe: While both schools share a similar campus feel and size (~2,500 students at Middlebury and ~1,800 students at Bowdoin), the overall atmosphere differs slightly. Middlebury tends to have an outdoorsy and environmentally-conscious vibe, whereas Bowdoin leans more towards an intellectual and culturally-focused environment. Both schools still provide a welcoming and supportive community for all students, so it mainly comes down to personal preferences.

At the end of the day, you need to reflect on your individual preferences and goals to determine which school might suit you better. Visiting each campus, talking to current students, and researching more about each college's unique offerings can help you decide which one will be a better fit for you. Good luck!
