Can someone clarify what tier 1 research universities are all about?

Hey all! As a high school junior in the midst of the college search process, I've been hearing a lot about tier 1 research universities. I'm not exactly sure what this classification means, so could someone help me understand what sets these schools apart from others? I'm especially curious about how it could impact my major, which is likely to be either linguistics or literature. Thanks!

Hi there! I can definitely understand why the college search process might bring up some questions. Let me try to shed some light on tier 1 research universities for you.

Tier 1 research universities are schools with a significant amount of research activity and funding. They tend to emphasize creating new knowledge and pushing the boundaries of their fields. While research is a focus, teaching remains important especially at the undergraduate level.

For your interests in linguistics or literature, a tier 1 research university could provide you with opportunities to engage in research, collaborate with professors, or access well-funded resources and facilities. My own child, who is studying psychology at a tier 1 research university, has had the chance to work as a research assistant in a lab and even co-author a paper.

That said, not all students find the research emphasis appealing, and sometimes there's a trade-off to consider in terms of smaller class sizes or a more tightly-knit campus community at less research-intensive schools. Ultimately, it's important to think about what environment best suits your learning style and personal preferences. Hope that helps clarify things for you!
